FOOD CRIMES❗❗

Food plays a very vital role in maintaining proper health. It gives us the energy and nutrients to grow and develop, be healthy and active, to move, work, play, think and learn. It also helps in the prevention and cure of diseases. However, if the foods we eat are improperly handled, prepared and cooked, it may cause serious illnesses and can even cause death of a person. Therefore, food safety and sanitation is very important.
Food safety is essential in protecting individuals from bacteria and parasites that can be passed through food consumption.
By practicing safe food handling, illnesses and fatalities can be prevented which is far better than detection. One example of food crime is food poisoning.

Recently this year, there were at least 1,925 people in the southern Philippines who got sick after eating the fruit-flavored candy.  Most of them were schoolchildren. The victims complained of stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting and headaches after consuming the durian, mango, and mangosteen-flavored treats that were sold by the vendors outside the schools.

The police had arrested nine street vendors who obtained the sweets from the same producer which was the Wendy's Delicious Durian Candy. The owner of that company was also under investigation after turning herself in to the police. Because the vendors had not made sure that the products they bought and sold were safe, they should also be charged for their negligence.

The test results indicated consisted of bacteria which can be found in human skin and hair which likely caused the contamination of the sweets. Some of the possibilities are the producers of the candies did not wash their hands before making the candies, or their sweat dripped in to the candy. It can also be that the candy touched the armpit of the candy makers or they did not wash their hands after they go to the comfort room.

All of these sound very unsanitary. The bottom line there is that hygiene is often overlooked by a lot of food establishments today which caused trouble to many. People’s health and safety should be their top priority since they should be satisfying their customers’ wants and needs. They should not compromise the quality of the food just to minimize their costs.

Another example is in Lau’s Buffet King in Newcastle which had shut down for eight days earlier this year after officers uncovered a catalogue of health and safety issues. Lau’s Buffet King is a popular Chinese restaurant in the United Kingdom. It has been fined £3,000 after cockroaches were found next to tubs of open ice-cream. Their customers complained for months of seeing cockroaches scuttling across tables and floors in Lau’s Buffet King.

These are true scenarios wherein we would never want to experience in any of the restaurants we would find in our place at any day of the month. People go and dine at restaurants because they wanted to eat delicious foods yet in return, they were not satisfied because of the unsanitary practices of a particular restaurant. These should be the focus of their management, which is to provide quality goods and services to their customers because we deserve the best. They should also never settle for anything less and should also prevent any insects and parasites than detecting them when it would be too late for them to take actions in their company.

What No one Tells You about CAFE RACER

During these last few days, I and my beau planned to dine at a restaurant to try new things and at the same time, to chat, and bond with each other. Though I always pass by the restaurant (Cafe Racer) every time I go to school and from school to my home, I never got the chance to stop by. I got curious so I did some research about the new restaurant. When I surfed the net, it amazed me more because of their restaurant’s unique theme. The cafe is inspired by a racing lifestyle in the UK where bikers race from one cafe to another. I really love their concept, very unique among the others.

They have indoor dining area and an outdoor dining area.

Their carwash is fully functioning as well.

They also have that cashier’s area walled off with an old Volkswagen van.

All of their tables and chairs were very innovative. SOme chairs are made out of old oil drums.

They also made tables out of old license plates and other oil drums were modified and turned into comfy couches.

It was Thursday evening when we decided to dine in the restaurant. When we arrived there, we were assisted by the guard on where to park our car. And when we were approaching the entrance of the cafe, someone suddenly called my name. And guess what? It was Sarah Jane Sanoza, who used to be my classmate in USJ-R. She is now working as a receptionist in the Cafe. She then ushered us to our seat which was a very cute halved beetle car. We then ordered Baked Back Ribs, Filet Mignon, Classic Cheeseburger, Bacon Bomb, Oreo Cheesecake Shake and Mango Freeze.
(with Sarah, the receptionist)

MENU

On the menu are sandwiches, burgers, pasta, pizza, salads, street food, desserts, steak, as well as chicken and pork dishes. Off the grill, there’s pork and chicken barbecue, and chops.

Baked Back Ribs

Filet Mignon

Classic Cheeseburger

Bacon Bomb

Oreo Cheesecake Shake

Their Baked Back Ribs was a bit dry in the inside and was too tangy for my palate. The Bacon Bomb was excellent and unique. But their Filet Mignon was very tough. It was still red in the inside. We still ate it though except for those part where we had a hard time swallowing. It was like we’re chewing a bubble gum. While their Classic Cheeseburger was just a simple and plain cheeseburger. It has nothing so special in it. Their Mango Freeze was good and their Oreo Cheesecake was superb.
Once we were done with our food, an attendant came to our table, smiled and suddenly took our plates without even asking for our permission. Me and my beau looked at each other with shocked faces. It was like she doesn't want us around or she finds our presence irritating. Uggh! I don't like her. I should have told her about it. Maybe next time though.

Cafe Racer is located at the North Reclamation Area. If you’re coming from Mandaue, it’s after Jollibee. It operates from 11am to 2am or even later and serves snacks and coffee, lunch, dinner as well as alcoholic beverages.

Tahooo! :D

In the Philippines, taho is a street food sold by peddlers known as "magtataho". They normally start walking on the streets even in the smallest alleys where there are probable customers early in the morning. Whenever a magtataho pass by our house and shouts "Tahooooo!", I can always see lots of kids gathering around him and buying taho. Most kids love to eat taho because of its sweetness and the tapioca pearls or what we call "sago". By the way, taho is a soft gelatin-like snack made from processed soya beans and is topped with caramel and the sago. Even the elders, they still enjoy eating taho. Taho is one of the most popular street foods in the Philippines and has been a part of every Flipino's life since childhood.

Halo-Halo

Halo-Halo is a very popular dessert in the Philippines. It is called halo-halo because varieties of ingredients are being mixed together making it a halo-halo. It is best eaten during summer. Some of the ingredients include sugar palm fruit, gelatin, tapioca, nata de coco, sweet potato, jack fruit, ice cream, leche flan and others. My mom is very fond of eating halo-halo. She can even empty a tall glass of halo-halo in no time. She sometimes doesn't want to share it with me, therefore, letting me buy my own glass of Halo-halo. But unlike my mom, I usually cannot consume all of my halo-halo.

Ginataang Monggo

Ginataang Monggo  is a delicious mung bean soup which includes diced pork and coconut milk for a rich, creamy flavor. This dish is one of my favorite because from the smell to its taste, it really soothes my palate and it's very delicious and healthy. It makes me want to eat more. I remember when I was still a kid, I didn't like to eat monggo maybe because of its dark color. My mom scolded me just to eat the monggo. While my cousin kept on encouraging me to eat them because it wasn't as bad as what i thought. And when I tried them, I got surprised because it was good. If it wasn't because of my cousin, I wouldn't be able to try and appreciate the food. Because of that experience, I learned not to judge the food by its color or appearance but through its taste. Since then, I eat monggo a lot.

Tokwa't Baboy

I've heard of the dish Tokwa't Baboy a lot of times but I had never tried it until the time we cooked it in the kitchen with my colleagues. It is a Filipino pork and tofu dish that is usually served as an appetizer or as a side dish with rice or congee. It amazed me because I never expected it to be easy and delicious at the same time. Though my prior experience with tofu was not that good because of its bland and dull taste, I never regretted eating Tokwa't Baboy because it was one of the most amazing things that happened to me. It really left me in awe.
